A full-day workshop for clinicians integrating ACT with psychedelic approaches
This full-day workshop offers an introduction to psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT), with a unique focus on how Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can strengthen and support this emerging modality. Led by Jason Luoma, PhD—an ACT researcher and clinician involved in several psychedelic clinical trials, including MDMA- and psilocybin-assisted therapy—participants will explore how ACT’s core processes can guide preparation, dosing, and integration, while also promoting ethical, values-driven clinical work.

Why ACT and Psychedelics?
Psychedelic therapy has shown promising outcomes for conditions such as depression, PTSD, anxiety, and addiction. But psychedelics are not a magic bullet—they are catalysts for experiential learning and emotional insight, which require skillful therapeutic support to translate into lasting change. ACT, with its focus on psychological flexibility, offers a robust and evidence-based framework for doing just that.
Workshop Topics
Over the course of the day, participants will engage with both theory and practice, including:
The PAT Model: A clinician’s overview of psychedelic-assisted therapy, including the typical structure (preparation, dosing, and integration), key roles of the therapist, and how different substances (e.g., psilocybin, MDMA, ketamine) are used in clinical and retreat settings.
Psychological Flexibility in PAT: How the six core ACT processes (acceptance, defusion, present moment, self-as-context, values, committed action) map onto the therapeutic arc of psychedelic therapy, and how they can serve as both preparation tools and integration scaffolding.
Clinical Applications of ACT in PAT: Examples of how ACT has been used in psychedelic clinical trials, and how ACT metaphors, exercises, and relational strategies can be adapted to support integration and meaning-making post-session.
Mechanisms of Change: A discussion of how psychedelics may enhance experiential openness, shift perspective on self and suffering, and increase psychological flexibility—and how ACT can help stabilize and sustain these shifts.
Working Ethically and Responsibly: Navigating legal realities, harm reduction strategies, cultural considerations, and the importance of humility in this work.
Future Directions and Training Pathways: Information about additional training resources and harm reduction approaches for clinicians interested in this emerging field.
